The Girdwood Charter School is a wilderness based center for higher education and ecology. Our mission is providing the best education for children of all ages using indigenous wisdom and modern technology. Our vision is seeing children enjoy a profound and lasting connection with nature while learning the skills necessary to function in a thriving society.
Wilderness Adventure • Ecological Stewardship Projects • & Multi-media Production are the primary elements of the curriculum. The curriculum and syllabus are 90% experiential (hands-on) blending outdoor education with the merging fields of video, computer and telecommunications technology. Staff and students explore, discover and share the beauty of the natural world while learning basic and advanced survival, stewardship skills and production capability.
• Wilderness Adventure is the basis of our education. "Nature is the best teacher." making it our goal and priority to get out into Nature as often as possible (every Saturday between August 1st and November 1st, 2008. We explore unique and exciting wilderness areas of Girdwood Valley and nearby destinations such as Bird Point. We engage in survival skills training such as fire and shelter building, finding food and water, and learning how to travel and navigate "off the beaten path". First-Aid and Emergency Response training are emphasized for both staff and students.
• Ecological Stewardship Projects include Outdoor Education for Kids, Beautification and Reclamation including trail work, garbage cleanup, recycling, landscaping, gardening, forestry: tree planting and wood harvesting. Renewable Energy (solar, wind, water power) research is a priority as is career training for teens and young adults. The Girdwood Charter School also offers Continuing Education classes and courses for parents along with instructor training for those with a high level of enthusiasm and competency for working with kids.
• Multi-media Production involves comprehensive hands-on documentary training and publishing: stories, photography, digital video, and music. Staff, students, parents and volunteers work together to create television programs for local and global broadcast including DVD authoring and Worldwide Web Communication.
"In a healthy society, economy always follows ecology, and education precedes them both." -Ken Carey, VISION
